“Shift” Happens, Let It Happen In Your Mind First! #MindsetShift

Friends, I am about to share something with you that I have NEVER shared with anyone before. I am going to give you a peak into how shifting my mindset has been instrumental in creating positive results in my life.

I speak openly about my position in life, you see, I, Sharon D. Meadows, am a Queen. But I didn’t grow up as a Princess. As a matter of fact, quite the opposite. My parents divorced when I was very young. I was raised by a single mother. She struggled, to raise a troubled  older son, a younger son that was unexpected  and myself, the middle child.

Friends, we grew up rough! Being from a small rural town in North Carolina, with only a high school education the opportunities for my mother to provide were extremely limited . We lived in a single-wide trailer, it was rusty from the top to the bottom. We were in the social class that most would classify as below the poverty level…and if you are from rural NC you would have called us “PO”.

Today, many would decline going to a home like the one that I grew up in out of fear of hitch-hiking roaches. Friends, I can assure you that we didn’t have any roaches, not a single one. We actually had something far worse than roaches, we had rats! And they were bold too! The rats in our home would chill during the day and at night, they would run wild. As I lay in bed as a child, I often would hear rats running above me in the ceiling. I would cringe feeling terrified because it sound like an army of rats. Then as soon as I would drift off to sleep, I would hear the rats running back and forth beneath my bed keeping me awake. And then one night my biggest fear became reality, one of the dirty rotten scoundrels ran over me as I lay in bed. I was frozen stiff in fear. Can you imagine? Most of you probably can’t but that’s OK.

During my childhood, I always felt uncomfortable in my living environment. Friends, from a young age, I had a deep burning desire to create change in my life. I didn’t know what the change would look like or how to create the change, but I knew if I wanted change it would start with me.

By the time I entered high-school, I knew that if I wanted to change my circumstances, I would need to go to college. My family did not promote higher education and when I said I was going to college no one took me serious. I applied to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was admitted to both Universities during the early admission process. I based my decision to attend UNC-Greensboro on the fact that my high-school sweetheart was attending NC A & T University. I thought I was going to marry him, we will address that decision in a later discussion.

During the time I spent at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, I was committed to the end goal, of graduating on time and landing a job. Friends, I graduated in 4 years with a Bachelor of Science in M.I.S and  received a job offer from Wachovia Corporation as a Computer Programmer prior to graduation.

Within 4 years after graduating from college I hit the six figure salary mark as a young black female in the I.T industry. I enjoyed a very comfortable lifestyle in the I.T industry for 20 years before deciding to do my own thing. Friends, I have come a long way from where I started, with such humble beginnings. And it all started in my mind by knowing that I had the ability to change my circumstances! Change begins in the mind!
